Hollis Faxon

Located on a tranquil street in the Bay Area, this stunning family home masterfully combines architecture and nature. Nestled behind a perimeter of trees and a lush lawn, the house is a sophisticated blend of concrete, steel, and glass. The property features an Olympic-length pool extending through the backyard, while an elevated steel footbridge guides visitors to the entrance, hinting at the elegance within.

The home was brought to life by an exceptional team of designers and architects. Tom Kundig, from the AD100 firm Olson Kundig, took charge of the architectural design, while the interiors were crafted by San Francisco–based designer Nicole Hollis. Together, they fulfilled the clients’ vision of a contemporary, multigenerational home that promotes seamless indoor-outdoor living.

Built with board-formed concrete, steel panels, and expansive glass, the exterior of the house is designed to complement the natural landscape, which was meticulously planned by Andrea Cochran Landscape Architects. The floor-to-ceiling windows offer sweeping views and can open onto alfresco seating areas, enhancing the connection between the interior and exterior spaces.

Inside, Nicole Hollis infused the home with an elevated, yet cozy aesthetic. The interiors feature a neutral palette with subtle pops of color, such as a teal velvet sofa in the living room and multi-colored velvet chairs in the dining room. Art is carefully integrated throughout the home, with large walls strategically placed to showcase the clients’ collection without disrupting the flow of the space.

The house is thoughtfully designed to accommodate the needs of a family. With multiple areas for the children to play, study, and relax, it’s clear that this home was created with family life in mind. The primary bedroom offers a serene retreat, with custom-designed furniture and sweeping views of the pool. This project perfectly captures the essence of California living, where indoor and outdoor spaces blend effortlessly into one another.
